5th grader wins city’s Reusable Bag Contest
From Staff Reports
Michaela Manriquez, a fifth grader at Hernandez Elementary, has won first place in the Keep San Marcos Beautiful "reusable bag" art contest.
Her art work depicted the theme, "Live the Loop: San Marcos Recycles!" The contest was open to all fifth grade students in San Marcos schools.
"Engaging our youth is the best way to promote sustainable practices for the future," said Amy Kirwin, KSMB program manager and solid waste coordinator for the city of San Marcos.
"Michaela's art work sends an important message to our community about replacing single use plastic bags with reusable bags."
Michaela's art work now is featured on KSMB reusable bags. Her homeroom teacher at Hernandez Elementary is Susan Brown.
Kirwin announced the award at the FoodStock concert and benefit for the Hays County Food Bank on the Hays County Courthouse lawn April 5.
