Outgoing SMDR sports editor Joe Vozzelli's five (bold) predictions for the upcoming year

Just My Type

By now, most of you know that today is my final day at the San Marcos Daily Record.

But, before I leave you, I figured I'd come up with five predictions, some of which are bold, for the upcoming year. Here goes:

1. The Rattlers will challenge Bowie for the district title in football.
In its preseason prognostications for District 14-6A, Dave Campbell's Texas Football had Austin-Bowie as the champion of the league followed by San Marcos.

I agree with DCTF.

More is not always better.

Quality over quantity.

Whatever phrase works for you, that’s head coach Everett Withers’ apparent strategy when it comes to quarterbacks.

Inoke Langi’s first season at a skill position could be a big one.

At least according to the Polynesian Football Hall of Fame who named Langi to the 2016 Polynesian College Football Player of the Year Award Watch List. 38 players of Polynesian decent were selected from 24 different Football Bowl Subdivision programs including Langi. The award is given to the most outstanding Polynesian college football player that “epitomizes great ability and integrity.”

Four years ago, Tyler Jones wasn’t on anyone’s radar.

He was the sub-200 pound true freshman quarterback from Stephenville who was expected to sit behind either senior Tyler Arndt or spring game standout Jordan Moore. Following his breakout game against Wyoming, he was the young kid amongst a team of 59 juniors and seniors in 2013.

Now his role is reversed.

Back in March, Frankie Griffin’s name wasn’t known to many Texas State fans.

Or even the media, for that matter.

And rightfully so as Griffin, who was redshirted as a freshman and sat out the 2015 campaign with a knee injury, hasn’t compiled any stats in a Bobcat uniform.

Yet, in the aftermath of Texas State’s spring drills, the Spring native earned the praise of Everett Withers.
