Four years ago, Tyler Jones wasn’t on anyone’s radar.

He was the sub-200 pound true freshman quarterback from Stephenville who was expected to sit behind either senior Tyler Arndt or spring game standout Jordan Moore. Following his breakout game against Wyoming, he was the young kid amongst a team of 59 juniors and seniors in 2013.

Now his role is reversed.

Back in March, Frankie Griffin’s name wasn’t known to many Texas State fans.

Or even the media, for that matter.

And rightfully so as Griffin, who was redshirted as a freshman and sat out the 2015 campaign with a knee injury, hasn’t compiled any stats in a Bobcat uniform.

Yet, in the aftermath of Texas State’s spring drills, the Spring native earned the praise of Everett Withers.

NEW ORLEANS — This time a year ago, Texas State was trending upward.

Since jumping to the Football Bowl Subdivision in 2012, every year prior to 2015 had been an improvement for the Bobcats who progressed from 4-8 that first season to 6-6 in 2013 and eventually 7-5 in 2014.

Last season was supposed to be Texas State’s best ever in the FBS ranks. Many predicted that the Bobcats would make their first bowl appearance and improve their stock as a burgeoning Group of Five program.

Just My Type: Thank you, San Marcos

Just My Type

The Daily Record saved my journalism career.

I'll always believe that.

Seven months removed from graduating with a Bachelor of Journalism degree at the University of Missouri, I found myself out of a job as the weekly newspaper where I was working folded.

I had two choices: Stay in the business or stop pursuing my dream and do something else.

The latter wasn't an option.

Luckily the Daily Record came calling.

Every Sun Belt team has a compelling storyline either surrounding their program or at a specific position as the league gathers in New Orleans, Louisiana, for Monday's media day.

How will Everett Withers do in his first season? What is Matt Viator’s long term plan for Louisiana-Monroe? How on earth does Georgia State replace Nick Arbuckle?
