Doc Edwards’™ Amazing Aquifer Adventure!, the education program introduced by the Edwards Aquifer Authority in January , is now also accessible to kids via cyberspace. A new website featuring Doc Edwards™, a fictional aquifer explorer, invites children to explore the Edwards Aquifer through a fun, interactive experience online.
More than 3,000 youngsters throughout the region already have experienced one of Doc Edwards’ engaging live presentations. Countless more can now do the same from the convenience of their home or nearest school or library computer. The virtual learning adventure features self-paced activities that highlight the aquifer’s geology and hydrology as well as the numerous plant and animal species of the aquifer. Doc Edwards’™ Amazing Aquifer Adventure! is accessible online at www.docedwards.org or through the Authority’s regular website at www.edwardsaquifer.org.
Doc Edwards’™ Amazing Aquifer Adventure! is the latest addition to a growing array of educational resources offered by the Authority to enhance understanding of the Edwards Aquifer. In addition to the website, the program features an interactive live show, an activity book with coloring sheets, stickers, book marks and trading cards of the threatened and endangered species. Children also can learn more about the aquifer by joining the Doc Edwards’ Aquifer Explorer’s Club. Additionally, kids can email Doc Edwards™ directly at doc@edwardsaquifer.org with their questions about the aquifer and its inhabitants. Other instructional elements such as teacher lesson plans and an education trunk of classroom resources are planned for introduction in the fall.
The Edwards Aquifer is one of the major groundwater systems in Texas and serves as the primary water resource for approximately 1.7 million people. More information is available online or by calling (210) 222-2204 or (800) 292-1047.
