Fifty students recently crowded into Lacye Odam's classroom for the Fourth Annual Kickoff Meeting of the San Marcos High School Chapter of Junior State of America (JSA). The students met to discuss current events and debate block scheduling. Odam, Speech and Debate coach, UIL academic coordinator and JSA sponsor, said, "I was so proud of the conversations that took place, as well as the diverse representation of our student body. If you want to feel optimistic about the future of our society, stop by a JSA meeting." The Junior State of America is an American non-partisan, student-run youth organization, the purpose of which is to help high school students acquire leadership skills and the knowledge necessary to be effective citizens and voters. Odam also thanked SMHS teachers and administrators Peggy Schiflett, Dawn Ellis and Denisha Priestly for stopping by to show their support for the students.
