The meaning of Veterans Day

Seven local American Legion and Auxiliary Post and Unit 144 members scored the 17 top Veterans Day posters designed by fifth graders at Irene Mendez Elementary School Tuesday afternoon. Judges were (left to right) Pat Murdock, local ALA president; Tom Tvrdik, commander of Post 144; Del David; Sandy Tvrdik, Ray Richard and (not pictured) Alan Cameron.  Interviewing veterans and interpreting the interviews with Veterans Day posters is one of Mendez teacher Brenda Butler’s ways of helping students learn to appreciate the veterans’ military service and the meaning of the observance of Veterans Day.  The posters will be placed on exhibit at the LBJ Museum of San Marcos for Saturday’s downtown Veterans Day celebration.
