Kyle/Buda VFW named best in state
At the 88th Annual Texas VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Convention held in Dallas, the Kyle\Buda VFW was, for the second straight year, awarded the title of “All State.” Each year the top 25 of 495 Texas VFW Post are awarded this title. These 25 Post are selected for their participation in VFW veterans programs, community service and service to active military and their families. Post Commander Ed Maycen (Vietnam) and Quartermaster Shane Arabie (Iraq) were named Captains of the All State Post Team, placing the Kyle/Buda VFW as the #1 VFW Post in Texas. Present Post Commander Rick Riel (Gulf) and Post Junior Vice Commander Sheila Dwyer (Gulf and Iraq) were also present to receive the Award. Ed Maycen was also presented with the Danny L. Henry award as the Outstanding VFW Post Commander in the State of Texas.
Maycen will travel to the VFW National Convention being held in Orlanda, Florida in August to receive the award of “ALL AMERICAN” for the Kyle\Buda VFW Post. This award places the Kyle\Buda VFW in the top 48 VFW Post among the 8,500 VFW Post in the US and 19 foreign countries. He will also be present in Orlando to see Glen Gardner, a fellow Texan, installed as the Commander-in Chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Maycen said “if you are a veteran and you want to sit around the bar and tell war stories, don't join the Kyle\Buda VFW.” The VFW is about “honoring the dead by helping the living,”and that is what we do! Vietnam veterans have been called “the Army waiting to die” due to the legacy of Agent Orange. Gulf vets are still plagued with the Gulf war syndrome, and we have men and women on the field of battle today. Prisoners of War and men still missing in action that have not been accounted for.” He also said, “I saw a patch just the other day that said: If you want to know the price of freedom…visit a VA hospital.” The 2.3 million members of the VFW and the 149 members of the Kyle\Buda VFW will not forget them.
