Tom Goynes, president of the Texas Rivers Protection Association (third from left) recently presented a check for $23,100 to the city of Martindale for the expansion of the Allen Bates River Park, with the donation including memorials to Michael Ash, Nancy Burns and Lillie Cochran. Also on hand were (from left) Jim Elliott, city council place 1, Betty Watkins of the San Marcos River Foundation (SMRF), Martindale Mayor Lorraine Harrison, Karen Linebarger, city council place 4 and Susanne Schmidt of the parks board. Goynes said donations came from canoeists from all over Texas and beyond. The SMRF contributed $2,000. Funds were also donated by the Guadalupe Blanco River Trust. Contributions are still needed for park improvements, and donations can be made through the Texas Rivers Protection Association or the Guadalupe Blanco River Trust. (Photo by Paula Goynes)
