Fourth graders from San Marcos CISD’s Irene K. Mendez Elementary School have joined Super Bowl MVP's and superstar brothers Peyton and Eli Manning and Scholastic Book Clubs to help donated one million books to disadvantaged children. Shown are the 4th grade homerooms of Jamie McCullough and Athena Reiche. In September, students in Reiche's classes pledged to read 100 books as part of the Scholastic Book Clubs' “Classrooms Care” program. The philanthropy-based literacy campaign is designed to teach children about the joys and importance of reading and giving. Reiche's two Language Arts classes joined to form “Team Peyton” and kept track of their progress using an oversize Classrooms Care poster. A companion Web site lets classes share and compare their achievements with other participating classrooms around the nation. The Web site at www.classroomscare.scholastic.com also provides activities, motivational videos featuring the Manning brothers, e-cards, a sweepstakes and details on Classrooms Care charity partners.
