Coma crime victim in Austin changes story

Austin — Austin police say a man hospitalized in a coma for two months has changed his story about who might have taken his debit card.

Austin police say the suspect whose photo was released apparently is the victim's estranged wife.

Police say the man, who on Thursday was identified as a crime victim, later acknowledged the person in the photos is his spouse and he lied to protect her.

Austin police also say the woman has no connection to Seton Medical Center, where the man was hospitalized. His name hasn't been released.

Police initially said the woman, seen in bank ATM surveillance, allegedly used the victim's debit card in late June to steal more than $1,300. The withdrawals were in Austin and San Antonio.

The case remains under investigation.
