Cattle Baron's Ball holds special meaning to chairman, community

Tammy Walden didn’t know what she was getting herself into when she raised her hand in front of the American Cancer Society representative. They were talking about the San Marcos Cattle Baron’s Ball.
“They wanted to know if anyone was interested in starting up the ball again,” Walden said. “I volunteered without understanding the whole concept. This event is huge.”

Bobcat football airs it out in 2nd scrimmage

Few players had more to prove Saturday morning in Texas State’s second spring scrimmage than soon-to-be senior quarterback Duke DeLancellotti.

Even before the Bobcats started spring camp, head coach Dennis Franchione lavished a mountain of praise on DeLancellotti for the field general’s offseason work ethic. Franchione made it seem as if DeLancellotti, who only saw action in two games last season, was the odds-on favorite to assert himself.

Bobcats beat Seattle for first series sweep

Texas State is picking the right time of the season to start playing well after capping a three-game sweep over Seattle with Saturday’s 6-4 win at Bobcat Ballpark.

It was the Bobcats’ first series sweep of the season, but more importantly, the victory allowed Texas State to remain atop the Western Athletic Conference standings with a 5-1 mark.

Pretty impressive, considering the Bobcats entered conference play with an overall record of 7-14. So is the start of something good?

SMHS girls basketball honored at recent banquet

From Staff Reports

San Marcos girls basketball reflected upon its 2012-13 campaign at the team’s annual awards banquet held last week at Embassy Suites.

Even though the Lady Rattlers fell short of the playoffs for a second consecutive season, many fond memories were shared.

Earning big awards were senior Michelle Moody, sophomore Bailey Hill and sophomore Madison Miles. Despite being injured for most of the season, Moody earned Most Valuable Player. Hill was named Offensive MVP, while Madison Miles brought home Defensive MVP.

HS Tennis: SMHS girls doubles team advances to regionals

Hard work pays off.

San Marcos will send a girls’ doubles team to the Region IV, Class 5A Tennis Tournament after Sarah Ybarra and Ali Herington placed second at the district meet. Ybarra and Herington took two girls from New Braunfels to the limit before falling 7-5, 6-4.

“I’m extremely proud of these two, as they worked hard all year,” San Marcos head coach Jack Hughes said. “Their reward is a trip to the regional tournament.”

Running with Moe: Ways to recover faster from running injuries

This past week I have had several individuals ask me about injuries, including myself.

As an old athletic trainer, I would fall back on the standard ‘RICE’ formula. This stands for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. This seemed to work for both sprains and strains to start letting the healing process begin.

I am not sure if all of these injuries have been the result of the marathon season winding down, and all of those long runs are finally catching up. The muscles, tendons and joints are just plain tired and need a time to recover.
