Take to the skies

Samuel Fullman was eight years old when he visited the Wright Brothers Museum in North Carolina. A visit that got him interested in flying.
“I was really impressed with the wind tunnel they used. And I was told they weren’t just engineers. They were scientists,” Fullman said. “That always stuck with me.”

Donuts and D-Day

Maurice T. Suttles VFW Post 3413 remembered D-Day (June 6, 1944) at a morning breakfast last week. D-Day would go down as the most successful invasion in history. Four thousand troops were released from ships onto the Normandy beaches. Commander Dave Adams put together a video of "Hays County in World War II," a documentary on interviews with veterans from Hays County. Augustine Lucio from VFW Post 3413 was one of the veterans in the video. Commander Adams passed out Krispy Kreme donuts to everyone. Unitarian Universalists serve dinner to the homesless

The first Wednesday of each month San Marcos Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (SMUUF) member and volunteer organizer Judy Telford and her crew of volunteers will serve a hot, home-cooked dinner to the residents at the Southside Community Center Homeless Shelter and others who come in for the meal. In the photo to the left, taking a short break in the Shelter’s kitchen, is Judy Telford, Gil Fulmer, Lisa Arceneaux, Mary Seaborne and Jeannie Lewis. Not pictured but helping also were SMUUF members Lee Bricker, Louise Ernst and Betty Watkins.

This is the full text of the statement issued by the family of murder victim Sheryl Ann Norris.
Jurors on Thursday sentenced Willie Roy Jenkins to death for the crime.

CTMC’s Daylight Dance scheduled for June 28

Research shows that dancing promotes balance and strength, as well as memory and brain function. Besides the well-documented mental and physical benefits, dancing also encourages interpersonal relationships, an essential part of optimal wellness.
The community is invited to share in fun, food and friendship at the upcoming Daylight Dance on June 28. The event will take place from 2-4 p.m. at Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church, located at 3039 Ranch Road 12 in San Marcos.

City honors SMHS LULAC chapter

San Marcos Mayor Daniel Guerrero recently congratulated members of the San Marcos High School chapter of LULAC for winning four major awards, including the state Council of the Year award, at the organization’s state convention in San Antonio May 29-June 2. The members of the SMHS Chapter received certificates from the city recognizing their hard work and commitment.

Texas announces online ‘water source’ drought tool

AUSTIN (AP) — Texans still recovering from the devastating 2011 drought have an online tool for information on water supplies and disaster assistance.
Texas Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples on Tuesday announced the one-stop portal called “The Water Source.”
Staples says the site combines drought information from various agencies and provides the basics of Texas water policy. Details are also available on reservoir levels and statewide drought conditions.
Experts have said the historic drought cost the state at least $7.6 billion in agricultural losses.

P&Z considers cost of improving city sidewalks

When the city of San Marcos asked residents for suggestions during the development of the comprehensive master plan, the overwhelming majority said they wanted a “walk-able” San Marcos.

Group donates helmets to SMCISD Pre-K students

For the second year, the Tri-County Medical Society sponsored a bicycle helmet giveaway for the pre-kindergarten students at Hernandez Elementary School — just in time for summer play. About 345 helmets were donated to the children aged 3-5, according to Hernandez Principal Rosemary Garza. The project is part of the Hard Hats for Little Heads program founded in 1994 by the Texas Medical Association (TMA) to help reduce head injuries among the state’s children and to encourage exercise. Persons in the San Marcos community who helped with the project included Dr. Annette Occhialini, Dr.

Early Literacy Month

The SMCISD School Board proclaimed July as “Early Literacy Month” at Monday’s meeting. On hand for the proclamation were members of SOAR (Seeking Opportunities, Achieving Results) who are sponsoring the July book drive for preschool age books. This year’s goal is to collect 45,000 books.
