Time for for SMCISD to televise its meetings

Seizure of phone records insults independent press

Distrust of government secrecy has been elevated to an exceptional level with the disclosure the Justice Department covertly examined two months of Associated Press phone records to determine who leaked details to the AP about a foiled terrorist plot.
This amounts to spying on an American news organization — common practice in dictatorships but scary conduct in a democratic system that prizes the public value of an independent watchdog press.


Recent events provide a strong sense of comfort

At last week’s Graduation Ceremony at Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, we anticipated that the nationally known black speaker, Dr. Marc H. Morial, former mayor of New Orleans and current CEO of the National Urban League — the nation’s largest civil rights organization — would speak for at least an hour or so which would have been fine.
But his opening line was, “My speech today is going to be 13 minutes and 13 seconds to honor this class of 2013.” He told the new graduates that they need to remember the three C’s in life – Choice, Courage, and Compassion. It was a brilliant speech.


CTMC’s Primary Stroke Center awarded advanced certifcation

San Marcos’ Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) was recently recognized with Advanced Certification for Primary Stroke Centers by the Joint Commission in conjunction with The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.
The certification has demonstrated that the program meets critical elements of performance to achieve long-term success in improving outcomes for stroke patients.


Miller students learn basics of car buying

In celebration of April being Math Awareness Month, Chuck Nash Auto and Mathworks at Texas State University hosted a ‘Sweet Deals On Awesome Wheels’ math contest for the students at Miller Middle School. Students were asked to examine the mathematics involved in deciding on a car purchase. Factors such as sticker price, available financing, fuel economy, and driving lifestyles were included in the analysis. Students then had to justify their choice of a hybrid (Chevy Malibu), regular car (Camaro), or a plug-in (Volt).


Seton opens Family Medicine Clinic in Luling

A new level of convenient health care has arrived in Luling.
The new Seton Luling Family Medicine Clinic will opened its doors recently on the campus of Seton Edgar B. Davis Hospital. It serves Luling and surrounding communities in Caldwell and adjacent counties.
The clinic offers primary family care for adults and children; physical exams; sports exams; well-woman annual exams; diabetes care and prevention; blood pressure and cholesterol management and disease management.

San Marcos High School graduating senior Francisco (Frankie) Torres has been selected as a St. David’s Neal Kocurek Scholarship recipient, according the high school’s College & Career Advisor Grace Delgadillo.
“Over 300 applications were submitted this year, and Francisco was selected out of the pool of students,” she said.


American Legion Post 144 to host Memorial Day ceremony

Men and women who have passed away after serving their country in the U.S. military will be honored during San Marcos American Legion Post 144’s annual Memorial Day ceremony at the San Marcos City Cemetery at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 25.
The public is invited to join the solemn ceremony. Prior to and after the ceremony, members of Boy Scout Troop 112 will place flags on the graves of veterans buried in eight local area cemeteries. Presiding over the program will be Post 144 Commander Tom Tvrdik.


Wade, Cox earn SMA’s top student honors

Two of San Marcos Academy’s most coveted student awards were presented during the 105th annual Commencement May 12.
Rusti Wade of San Marcos was named winner of the President’s Cup, which is the highest student award given at the Academy.
The daughter of Toby and Staci Wade, Wadehas attended SMA for six years. A cadet captain in the JROTC Bear Battalion, Wade has served in numerous leadership positions, including her senior position as the Battalion Operations and Training Officer.
