Will to win? We can’t give in to our fears

A Boston firefighter, one of many who rushed in to aid bomb victims last Monday, told a TV interviewer, "We will win. I promise you, we will win."
As a first responder, he's a genuine hero. But his prediction, while understandable, is vague and even misguided. We are increasingly a nation focused on winning at a time when the world around us doesn't often allow it.

Let’s stick to the facts

San Marcos CISD will be holding a school bond election on May 11. As president of the Board of Trustees, I want to personally give you the facts about what is being proposed, and perhaps discredit any misinformation about the bond and our district in general that has been circulated in our community.

Burger King first quarter earnings soar

Burger King's first-quarter earnings more than doubled even though revenue fell, as the fast-food chain trimmed several restaurant-related expenses.
The Miami-based company had warned earlier this month that sales at established restaurants were expected to fall during the quarter, and they wound up declining 1.4 percent. That includes a 3 percent drop in the United States and Canada.

Live Oak Partners expanding to Lockhart

Live Oak Health Partners (LOHP) Specialty Care will soon open its Lockhart clinic, allowing some patients to remain local rather than travelling to surrounding cities for care.
Specialty medical services that will be offered at the clinic include general surgery, orthopaedics and gynecology.
“Live Oak Health Partners care for many patients from Lockhart, and we are so pleased and happy to now be able to bring services directly to them,” LOHP Physician Practice Administrator Lenore DePagter, DO, said.

Finance: Ruiz publishes third book

Ruben Ruiz, author and CEO of Ruiz Financial Group, LLC., is publishing his new book, “My Own Financial Blueprint,” with the entrepreneurial publisher Morgan James Publishing.
Morgan-James kicking off the new book with an “Amazon Best Seller Campaign,” complete with an online social media contest and a financial boot camp.
Ruiz said he hopes to be on Amazon’s best-seller list on May 1.

Celebrating history and heritage

The Heritage Association of San Marcos, El Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos, the Johnnie Armstead Calaboose African American History Museum, Commemorative Air Force and LBJ Museum of San Marcos will celebrate local history the first weekend of May with tours and special events. Mayor Daniel Guerrero issues a proclamation for Heritage Weekend.

LWV schedules its annual meeting May 6

The San Marcos Area League of Women Voters invites current and prospective members to attend its annual meeting and dinner at 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 6 at the Price Seniors Center, located at 222 West San Antonio St.
The evening will open with a social from 5:30 to 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. and the annual meeting at 6:45 p.m.
On the agenda for the business meeting is the election of board members and officers for the new membership year.
Tickets to the dinner are $15 at the door but dinner reservations must be made by Wednesday, May 1. Spouses and friends are welcome.

A Word About Recycling - April 28, 2013

Always enjoy reading about youth getting involved in recycling. From an article in the Resource Recycling eNewletter:
"This year's RecycleMania Tournament has concluded, with 523 participating colleges and universities collectively recovering 90.3 million pounds or recyclables and organic materials."

Davidson a Fulbright Scholar

Ian Davidson, a professor in the School of Music at Texas State University, has been named a U.S. Fulbright Scholar and awarded a grant to visit Tumaini University Makumira in Tanzania May 5-26, and again Jan. 1-21, 2014.
As a visiting scholar to the university, Davidson will provide compositional, performance and recording experiences for current students through seminars, performances and collaborative projects.
He will also assist in the assessment and development of the school’s undergraduate music curriculum and resources with emphasis on composition, recording and performance.
