Update: 2 die in Caldwell plane crash

Austin — Authorities say two people died when a turboprop-powered airplane crashed on final approach to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Texas Department of Public Safety spokesman Tom Vinger says the victims in Monday's crash in rural Caldwell County south of the airport appeared to be an adult male and a boy. It was unclear whether they were related.

Vinger said a dense fog advisory was in effect for the area at the time of the crash, but it's unclear whether fog or light rain factored in the crash.

Airport spokesman Jim Halbrook says the plane was inbound from Rockport. Federal Aviation Administration records indicate the plane was registered to Texas oil and gas attorney W. Kent Riley.

From staff reports

Two people died when their single engine turbo prop airplane crashed into a Caldwell County field Monday morning, authorities said.

Caldwell Director of Emergency Management Jimmy Parker said the plane had taken off in the Rockport area and was bound for Austin.

He said it went down around 11:30 a.m. into a field near an LCRA substation in northern Caldwell County. That area is between Lockhart and Mustang Ridge.

"We don't really understand all the particulars," Parker said Monday afternoon. He said there was heavy fog in the area at the time, though it's not known if that contributed to the crash. "It was very foggy. I don't know what the ceiling was," he said.

The Department of Public Safety was in control of the scene with federal investigators from the National Transportation Board en route.
