National Barbecue conference coming to SM next March

Love the smell and taste of good barbecue?
Well that aroma may permeate the air even more than normal in San Marcos next March as the city plays host to the National Barbecue Association’s national conference which will headquarter at Embassy Suites for a few days.

Texas Natural Festival, Western Swing Hall of Fame Concert set for Saturday

Downtown San Marcos will be alive with music, arts, the Farmer’s Market, food booths and the monthly Downtown Sidewalk Sale this Saturday, May 18 around the Courthouse Square.
Main Street’s Texas Natural Festival and the 26th annual Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame concert is on tap all day and evening Saturday. The Farmer’s Market will be held on San Antonio Street on the south side of the courthouse from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Participating downtown stores and shops will hold special sidewalk sales around the construction zone on N. LBJ and Hutchison Streets.

CTMC opens new Mommy Baby Boutique

Central Texas Medical Center (CTMC) recently held a grand opening event for the Honeysuckle Mommy Baby Boutique.
The store is located inside the CTMC Women’s Center and features lactation supplies and consultation as well as custom, hand-made gifts and merchandise. The opening of Honeysuckle represents another important step in CTMC’s growing focus on breastfeeding initiatives.

Life in technicolor: Wimberley resident lives out big-city dreams on new season of HGTV Star

It took two years and countless casting calls, but after being cut just before season seven, Wimberley resident Abby Vasek was invited back to the semi-finals and was chosen as one of 10 contestants on HGTV’s eighth season of Design Star — with a new name this time around, HGTV Star.
Before the show, Vasek’s life was still fast-paced between juggling twin boys, a husband and her interior design company.
“I realized that all of the beautiful things I want in my life require maintenance,” Vasek said.

Local author to teach thriller writing workshop at SMPL

Local author, Roger Boylan will teach a free seminar on the basics of writing “thrillers” at the San Marcos Public Library. Both experienced and novice writers are invited on Saturday, May 18 at 1 p.m.
In this seminar, attendees will learn practical, focused ways to write a thriller: How to analyze your thriller’s structure, what to leave in, and what to take out. Characterization, setting, and plot will be analyzed. Participants may bring a synopsis draft of a proposed thriller, which will be discussed. Call the library at 393-8200 to sign up.

Souper Bowl of Caring donation doubled from last year

The Hays County Food Bank received the monetary donation results from the Souper Bowl of Caring, a food and fund drive before the Super Bowl game this year. Thanks to H-E-B stores in Buda, Kyle and San Marcos, the Food Bank was given a $25,657 check. The Food Bank estimates that money will provide over 11,000 meals to families in need. Earlier this year, the Food Bank received 4,408 pounds of food from the Souper Bowl of Caring campaign.

Olivia Salazar of San Marcos died May 9, 2013 at the age of 66.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 13 at Los Angeles Funeral Home. Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. that evening at the funeral home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Memory Lawn Memorial Park in Martindale

College Baseball: Bobcats outlast DBU

All Texas State freshman Matt Smith wanted to do was eat.

When Smith stepped up to the plate Thursday night with two runners on in the bottom of the 12th inning, he had fajitas on his mind. If Smith’s sinking line drive found grass, he and his teammates could finally enjoy their catered dinner.

“I was just hoping for it to drop, so we could go home and eat,” Smith said. “I got a fastball down the middle and I tried to take advantage of it.”
