County considers how to use CAMPO funds

Hays County Commissioners on Tuesday took some initial steps towards figuring out just exactly how the approximately $5.68 million in funds from CAMPO (Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization) would be used.
The money is a mixture of state and federal funding, consultant Michael Aulick told the court, adding that some of it would require a 20 percent local match and other portions might be governed by federal regulations.

Release confirms homeowner shot suspected intruder

The Hays County Sheriff’s Office has released a statement confirming that the homeowner shot 20-year-old Kevin Ray Rodriguez prior to a SWAT standoff Jan. 31.

Mud slings in LOWV debate

As early voting nears, the local races for Hays County District Attorney and Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 Place 2 are heating up.
At Monday night’s League of Women Voters debate, candidates offered sharply counters to opponents and often criticized the position they are hoping to take over.

High School Basketball: Rattlers lose to NB-Canyon

Jarrett Henderson didn’t plan on adding Shaye Derby to his highlight reel.

Derby, a guard from New Braunfels Canyon, just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time while Henderson, a senior forward for San Marcos, soared through the air with his right hand cocked back for a tomahawk dunk.

High School Soccer: SVHS is too much for San Marcos

It’s not easy for a team to wait more than two weeks to lace up the cleats again.

San Marcos had that unenviable task Tuesday night when it played the always-tough Smithson Valley Lady Rangers in the District 25-5A opener. Smithson Valley notched a 3-0 victory over the Lady Rattlers at Goodnight Middle School.

Middle School Basketball: Goodnight rolls on

The Goodnight eighth grade ‘B’ team beat Miller 50-34 to go undefeated in district play for the season. The ‘B’ team was one of three Goodnight teams to win a district championship.

SMYBSA extends player registration

While recent weather has made people think about anything but baseball and softball, the San Marcos Youth Baseball/Softball Association is ready to get another season rolling and is still looking for players in all divisions.

Registration has been extended until Monday, Feb. 17 and can be done at the San Marcos Parks and Recreation Office, which is located at 401 E. Hopkins. Cost per player is $60, which is a significant drop from the usual $80 price tag like in previous years.

Minerva ‘Minnie’ Contreras

Minerva “Minnie” Contreras was born on Aug. 24, 1955 and was escorted to her heavenly home by God’s angels on Feb. 8, 2014.
Minnie was known and loved by all and will be remembered for her friendly smile. She is survived by her parents Raul and Oralia Contreras; a brother, George Contreras; a sister, Gloria Juarez; brother-in-law, Gabe Juarez; and nephews Gabe Juarez III and Gregory Juarez.
Viewing will begin at 8:30 a.m. immediately followed by a Rosary at 9 a.m. and Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in San Marcos.

Cecile Elms Howard

Cecile Elms Howard was born April 11, 1921, to Florence Mae Hall Elms and Ernest Osborne Elms in Killeen. She passed away on Feb. 10, 2014.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Marie Strader and husband Ivy B. Strader, her first husband Reedie Howard and her second husband James Arnold.

Thelma E. Lane

Thelma E. Lane, 83, of San Marcos, passed away in Wimberley on Feb. 10, 2014. Visitation at 10 a.m. followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15 in the Pennington Memorial Chapel. There will also be a visitation at 12:30 p.m. and Graveside Services at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16 in the Mausoleum Chapel at Galveston Memorial Park Cemetery in Hitchcock.
