Birding with Jerry Hall: Hornsby Bend is magnet for birds, birders

A teenage boy looking for arrowheads 54 years ago helped make the Hornsby Bend biosolids plant a prime destination for area birders.
It happened in November, 1959, when Pancho Oatman, from Austin, was walking along the Colorado River in Del Valle. Instead of arrowheads, he discovered large flocks of waterfowl near the river at the sewage ponds of Hornsby Bend.
On his initial visit, Pancho saw a Bonaparte's gull and four female common goldeneye ducks. These were the first of these species reported in Travis County.
