College Baseball: Texas State prepares for big WAC series

Once sophomore right fielder Cody Lovejoy squeezed the final out of Tuesday’s 4-1 win over Texas A&M, Texas State could finally relax a bit. Not only was the Bobcats’ victory physically taxing, but it also fatigued them mentally.

Prior to the game, Texas State remembered those affected by the horrific explosion in West and Heath Harris, who is the best friend of sophomore shortstop Garrett Mattlage, threw out the first pitch. Harris’ father, Kenny ‘Lucky’ Harris, died last Wednesday.

HS Baseball: Rattlers take on Canyon

Statistically speaking, the San Marcos Rattlers still have a shot at grabbing a share of District 25-5A title with a win in tonight’s regular-season finale against New Braunfels-Canyon.

First-place Smithson Valley’s 10-6 loss to New Braunfels last Friday put San Marcos and Converse-Judson within one game of first place, establishing the possibility of a three-way tie for the title if the Rattlers and Judson win and Smithson Valley loses.

High School Track and Field: Rattlers ready for regionals

Four San Marcos High School athletes will aim for state berths as the Class 5A, Region IV Track and Field Championships begin today at San Antonio’s Heroes Stadium.

SMHS junior Nikki Sanchez will be making her third consecutive regional appearance after placing second in the 800-meter run at last week’s Area meet with a time of two minutes, 17.42 seconds. Sanchez will be shooting for her second straight state berth.

Women's College Basketball: Bobcat women ink JUCO point guard

The Texas State women’s basketball program announced the signing of junior college transfer Meghan Braeuer for the 2013-14 season. Braeuer will come to San Marcos from Midland College.

“Meghan is a skilled player who adds not only physical depth to our team, but an attitude of toughness and resiliency,” head coach Zenarae Antoine said. “On paper she is a proven player, but even more importantly she is a young woman who has battled through adversity and found success. She will have an immediate positive impact on our program both on and off the court.”

College Softball: State hosts final home series

Texas State finds itself in an unusual position entering the second-to-last weekend of the regular season.

In the past, the Bobcats already knew their seed entering a conference tournament. But now, Texas State is just hoping to actually make the Western Athletic Conference Tournament, which will be held in Ruston, La. from May 8-11.

College Track and Field: Bobcats host 4th and final meet

Texas State will host the Bobcat Classic this weekend at the Texas State Track and Field Complex.

The meet, which will take place today and Saturday, will be the team’s fourth home meet of the season, and it’ll bring a crowded field of competitors, including Texas A&M’s No. 1 women’s team and No. 2 men’s team.

UTEP’s No. 25 men’s team will also compete along with teams ranked alongside Texas State in the south central region: Houston, SMU, Northwestern and Louisiana Tech. New Mexico State will be participating, a team ranked regionally in the mountain region.

Powerlifters excel

The San Marcos High School Powerlifting teams have produced two state medalists this year. Thomas Mascorro clinched the 2nd place medal in the state at the Texas High School Powerlifting Associate State Championships.
Karissa Arroyo took 7th place in Texas in the 97 weight class at the women’s state competition. The Rattler women’s team finished the season ranked as 21st in the state; the men’s team rose from the 25th spot last year to #14 in the state this year, thereby qualifying as a Top Fifteen Team.

Artists recognized

Three SMHS student artists were recently recognized by San Marcos CISD trustees. Two qualified and placed in the annual Texas State Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE) held in Bryan on April 6.
SMHS junior Hunter McMain received a 2nd place rating, qualifying her as an All-Area Artist. Sophomore Trinity Rinear, earned a 1st place rating, making her an All-State Artist.
