HS Track: Wind, rain hamper first day of District 25-5A meet

The San Marcos Rattlers were hoping to accomplish more after the first day of the District 25-5A Track and Field Championships Wednesday at Converse-Judson’s Rutledge Stadium.

For that matter, so was every other team at the meet. But Mother Nature had different plans, as windy and wet weather postponed the varsity field events until today, as preliminaries and the 3,200-meter finals were able to take place.

Now that spring camp is over, Texas State can finally relax. Or can they?

Even though the Bobcats wrapped up spring ball last Saturday with the annual Maroon and Gold Spring Game, there is still a lot of work to do in the offseason to prepare for their first season in the Sun Belt Conference. Texas State, however, showed a lot of promise in the spring game, which Maroon won by a score of 28-14.


Athletics: Teaff to speak at SMA April 18

Legendary college football coach and motivational speaker Grant Teaff has a message for the coaches, teachers and other mentors who struggle to make a difference in the lives of today’s young people.

He will share that message during a lecture at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at San Marcos Baptist Academy. The event is free and open to the public.

“Take the lead when it comes to ethics and integrity,” Teaff writes in his newly published book Beyond the Game: A Coach’s Influence. “We have the wonderful opportunity each day to touch and change lives through the power of our influence.”


Outdoors: Whiteside takes sixth place at BASS State Tournament

The Canyon Bass Club of San Marcos was formed in 1968. I was a charter member but dropped out of the club in 1990.

Many of my friends, who are now old guys, still fish in the club. Each year the club sends its top six fishermen to fish the BASS (Bass Anglers Sportsman’s Society) Federation Nation State Tournament.

This year the tournament was held on big Sam Rayburn Lake in East Texas. The six- man team (Kandie Candelaria, Randi Brudnicki, John Beene, Clint Robertson, Jason Brudnicki, and Bobby Whiteside) spent three days pre-fishing and then


Local church, community come together to fight hunger in pilot program

Members at FBC got together this fall to discuss a community-wide outreach program. When they found out that 76% of the San Marcos school district was in poverty, they knew what they wanted to do.
Aurelia Newton said that kids go home and don’t eat on the weekends. School Fuel is a pilot program at Mendez Elementary and 30 students go home with sack lunches every Friday.

HCCS students place in UIL state academic competitions

This year some of those on the TAPPS 1A Academics team for Hill Country Christian School made it to the state competitions held in Austin at Concordia University.
The three that qualified were juniors Frank Linam and Ariana Rhem and senior Jacob Horton.
Rehm, however, was unable to make it to state, because of a conflicting volleyball tournament.
Linam and Horton both took part in the science competition. When they finally posted the results, Linam had received sixth place.


Beatrice Rodriguez Rios

Beatrice Rodriguez Rios, a resident of Canyon Lake, surrounded by her loving family, became free from her earthly bonds, assending into the heavens to be with our Holy Father on April 7, 2013 at the age of 83.
Born July 29, 1929 in Corpus Christi, she is preceded in death by her husbands Victor Flores and Raymond Rios; grandson Porfirio Flores Jr.; parents Lazaro and Ramona Flores Rodriguez and 15 brothers and sisters.

CDBG, Gas Lamp project due discussion

The San Marcos City Council will hold a packet meeting on Friday at 12 noon at City Hall to review the agenda for the April 16 City Council meeting.
In addition, the City Council will hold a public hearing on the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) 2013 program year and discuss the Gas Lamp project Public Improvement District (PID).
