Suspect in sex assault apprehended

A 21-year-old suspect in a sexual assault who had been on the run was apprehended by authorities Tuesday morning in Austin.

Angel Hernandez, aka Angel Arturo Hernandez-Sustaita, was taken into custody without incident in the 2400 block of Dove Tail Lane in south Austin by members of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, Hector Gomez of the U.S. Marshals Service said in a press release.

Track and Field: SMA athletes run strong at recent meets

The San Marcos Academy varsity and middle school track and field teams continue to warm up for upcoming district meets with solid performances last weekend.

The SMA varsity team competed in the Navarro Panther Relays last Thursday, with junior Justin Pavelka taking first place in the 800-meter run.

Pavelka also helped the 1,600-meter relay win a bronze medal with teammates Tung Ming, Des Jackson and Parker Allan.

College Football: Texas State RBs looking stronger

What can a team do to replace a running back who accounted for 32 percent of its rushing yards and 42 percent of its rushing touchdowns the previous season? Texas State — and head coach Dennis Franchione — hope a sheer number of possible replacements do the trick.

When Marcus Curry exhausted his eligibility last fall, it left the Bobcats in a bind. Curry did so much for Texas State ever since Franchione and his staff took over and now the team must find another capable workhorse in his mold.

College Athletics: Sun Bolt: WKU to leave in 2014

IRVING (AP) — Conference USA will add Western Kentucky and new coach Bobby Petrino at the same time the league’s most recent football champion plans to leave.

Commissioner Britton Banowsky said Monday that Western Kentucky will officially join C-USA on July 1, 2014. That will be after ex-Arkansas coach Petrino’s first season in charge of the Hilltoppers.

That is also when Tulsa, the defending Conference USA football champion, is expected to join a migration to the league that’ll no longer be known as the Big East.

Drag Racing: IHRA’s Nitro Jam set for this weekend

MARION — When the International Hot Rod Association’s Nitro Jam series made its return to Marion’s San Antonio Raceway in 2011, the event was deemed an overwhelming success.

The largest crowd in San Antonio Raceway history was on hand for the return of the IHRA’s unique brand of motorsports entertainment as fans in and around the Alamo City embraced the thrills of the world’s fastest machines. Then, in 2012, the event grew even bigger with another capacity crowd on hand for the largest U.S.-based Nitro Jam of the year.

College Track and Field: State athletes compete on final day of Texas Relays

AUSTIN — Texas State’s track and field team competed in three events in the final day of the Texas Relays Saturday, claiming points in two of the competitions.

Freshman Dasha Tsema finished fourth in the discus with a throw of 47.75 meters. The throw puts her atop the Western Athletic Conference in just her first season for the Bobcats.

Texas State also finished sixth in the premier event of the Relays, the 4x400-meter relay. Freshmen James Hillard, Anthony Johnson, Tyrone Jackson and junior William Murray ran for a sixth place time of 3:10.76.
