Trekkie alert: Shuttlecraft Galileo landing in Houston

HOUSTON (AP) — The Star Trek shuttlecraft Galileo is landing in Houston to be displayed not far from NASA's Mission Control, which may have been able to help Dr. Spock all those years ago.
The Galileo is the shuttlecraft that crash-landed on a hostile planet in the 1967 episode "The Galileo Seven."
The Houston Chronicle (http://bit.ly/13w81eA ) reports the bit of Trekkie memorabilia was purchased by collector Adam Schneider for $61,000.

I used to think 30 years was an awfully long time.
We arrived in San Marcos just after midnight on August 1, 1981. The last day of July 1981 was my last day on active duty with the United States Air Force.
The year before we had passed through San Marcos and stopped to say hello to our good friend, Jim Humphries. Jim, at that time, was the pastor of First Baptist Church, but he had been my pastor at Trinity Baptist Church on Cong Li Street in the old world city of Saigon.

San Marcos Arts Council to host Working Artist Workshop June 11

The San Marcos Arts Commission (SMAC) has announced its first Working Artist Workshop entitled Business of Arts to be held Tuesday, June 11 from 6 p.m.to 8 p.m. in the Multi-Purpose Room at the San Marcos Activity Center, 501 E. Hopkins.
Business of Arts will be presented by Robert “Rex” Schuller from the Texas Accountants and Lawyers for the Arts.
“We are pleased to provide Working Artist Workshops for artists in our community in an effort to advance art education in San Marcos,” said Kelvon Hansen, Arts Commission Chair.

GIDDINGS — Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative’s members elected one new director and re-elected three incumbent directors at the co-op’s Annual Meeting last week in Giddings.
Kathleen Handy defeated George Martinez in the race to represent District 3, Bastrop County. Incumbent directors Milton Shaw, District 1, Caldwell, Hays, Gonzales and Guadalupe counties; Ben Flencher, District 5, Burleson County; and Kenneth Mutscher, District 7, Washington County, were unopposed and re-elected in their respective races.

Wade, Cox earn SMA’s top student honors

Two of San Marcos Academy’s most coveted student awards were presented during the 105th annual Commencement May 12.
Rusti Wade of San Marcos was named winner of the President’s Cup, which is the highest student award given at the Academy.
The daughter of Toby and Staci Wade, Wadehas attended SMA for six years. A cadet captain in the JROTC Bear Battalion, Wade has served in numerous leadership positions, including her senior position as the Battalion Operations and Training Officer.

American Legion Post 144 to host Memorial Day ceremony

Men and women who have passed away after serving their country in the U.S. military will be honored during San Marcos American Legion Post 144’s annual Memorial Day ceremony at the San Marcos City Cemetery at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 25.
The public is invited to join the solemn ceremony. Prior to and after the ceremony, members of Boy Scout Troop 112 will place flags on the graves of veterans buried in eight local area cemeteries. Presiding over the program will be Post 144 Commander Tom Tvrdik.

SMHS’ Torres gets Kocurek Scholarship

San Marcos High School graduating senior Francisco (Frankie) Torres has been selected as a St. David’s Neal Kocurek Scholarship recipient, according the high school’s College & Career Advisor Grace Delgadillo.
“Over 300 applications were submitted this year, and Francisco was selected out of the pool of students,” she said.
