The Dow Jones is lying to Americans

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is at a record high, and the unemployment rate has ticked down to 7.7 percent, but this is no time to celebrate. The economy is still in the doldrums.

Stop the toll road frenzy

Davalos out at Texas State

For the first time in a while, Texas State will look for a new leader for its men’s basketball program.

After seven years as head coach and a 92-107 overall record, Doug Davalos and the Bobcats parted ways. Davalos’ contract ran out at the end of the season and won’t be renewed.

“I am very appreciative of what Coach Davalos has done,” Texas State Director of Athletics Dr. Larry Teis said in a statement. “Davalos inherited a tough situation when he came to Texas State. Recruiting three years in three different leagues is not easy. The decision to not renew his contract was mutual.”

College Hoops: Bobcats set up for future success

By 10 p.m. last Friday night, Texas State no longer had a team left in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.

Last Tuesday, the Bobcat women fell in the first round to the University of Denver. Despite keeping it close through most of the first half, Texas State — and senior guard Diamond Ford — couldn’t hang with the Pioneers in the second half of a 73-63 loss.

HS Softball: Lady Rattlers host Judson

San Marcos knew it had its work cut out for itself when it advanced to the Gold Bracket of its own Spring Break Classic. With how head coach Cathy Stoughton likes to invite some of the state’s best teams, anything can happen.

Despite a few good innings, the Lady Rattlers weren’t able to post a win Saturday in the final round of the tournament. San Marcos fell to St. Gerturdis Academy, 6-1, and then dropped a 4-1 decision to Pilot Point later that day.

Jenica Flores recorded the lone RBI in the first game, while Ellie Hernandez notched a run in the second.

HS Baseball: SMHS ready to begin 25-5A play

The San Marcos High School baseball team has played 22 games this season. And while SMHS head coach Bryan Webb has been delighted with the way his Rattlers have fared so far, compiling a 15-6-1 record. But for him and the rest of the quad, tonight is the beginning of a completely “new” season as the Snakes open District 25-5A play at Smithson Valley.

“We designed a tough schedule against some very good programs, and to be where we are at right now is nice,” Webb said. “But this scheduled was designed to get us ready for district play, and I think it’s served it’s purpose well.”
