The king of feel-good: Ponty Bone and the Squeezetones set to rock Summer in the Park

Ponty Bone started playing the accordion after his father found out he couldn’t start school until after his sixth birthday. He immediately enrolled his son in accordion lessons and enforced one hour of practice time each weekday.
The lessons paid off since Bone is now known as an authentic Texas accordion king, a master of the instrument. Bone has spent his lifetime playing with some of the state’s most influential artists and leading his band, The Squeezetones, to popularity throughout the United States and across Europe.

Gilbert Frederich Haberer

Gilbert Frederich Haberer, 98, retired farmer/rancher of the Kyle area, passed away June 10, 2013 at 4:50 a.m. in the Regent Care Nursing Center in San Marcos. He was born March 24, 1915 to Alfred John Haberer and Lydia Johanna Schletze in Kyle. He was baptized Aug. 8, 1915 by Pastor Herman Barnofske in what is now St. John Lutheran Church.

James Curtis Garcia Ybarra

James Curtis Garcia Ybarra, 36, of Canyon Lake, was called upon by our Lord and Savior to join him up in his Kingdom. JC was born on July 18, 1976 to Jose and Janie Ybarra in San Antonio. JC was a loving, caring and energetic husband, father, brother, uncle and cousin. He’ll be remembered as the life of the party, with a handsome smile.

Defense argues for Jenkins’ life

An associate professor of criminal justice at Texas State University told jurors on Tuesday that convicted rapist and murderer Willie Roy Jenkins was himself a victim of sexual abuse at the hands of the older woman he began a relationship with while he was in high school.

Bill could affect area food banks

Food banks nationwide could see an increase of people at their doors if a bill that passed through the U.S. House of Representatives’ Agriculture Committee makes its way into law — but if necessary, local food banks may be able to handle it.

Buie Tract workshop scheduled for tonight

The San Marcos City Council is holding a public workshop at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the city council chambers to receive a presentation and hold a discussion on the Buie Tract, a nearly 150-acre proposed development at the corner of Craddock Avenue and Wonder World Drive.

Montana honored for 20 years of service

The city of San Marcos recently paid tribute to Jesse Montana, who recently retired after 20 years with the Parks and Recreation Department by declaring Thursday as Jesse Montana Day in San Marcos. Montana joined the city on Nov. 15, 1993 and devoted his skills and expertise in maintaining more than 1,000 acres of parkland, litter pick up, setting up rental facilities and special events, and assisting in park construction projects.
