Howard Earl Moon

Howard Earl Moon of San Marcos passed away on Jan. 13, 2007, at the age of 87. He was born in Bartlesville, Oklahoma on May 14, 1919, to Claire Ellery and Ethel Lemon Moon.
Howard graduated from Bartlesville High School in 1937. He attended Oklahoma University and he received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of California at Berkeley. He received his Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Southern California. Howard was in the United States Air Force from 1942 to 1970 in the 322nd Air Combat Command. He served his country during three wars: World War II, Korea and Viet Nam, and he was honorably discharged at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
During World War II, Howard was a navigator with the Air Evacuation Unit in the Pacific Theater. He met Edna Brackett while stationed at Hickam Air Force Base in Honolulu, Hawaii. They have been married for over 61 years. Interestingly, they share the same birthday, May 14, although a year apart. Their names are both included on the War Memorial in San Marcos.
Howard first came to San Marcos as the commander of the ROTC Detachment at Southwest Texas State College from 1963-1968. After retirement, Howard returned to San Marcos and was the Director of Student Services at Southwest Texas State University for 10 years.
Additionally, Howard was a loyal member of the Fraternal Order of Masons for 51 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Virginia, and his daughters Carol Moon and Betty Bish. He is survived by his brother, Robert L. Moon and wife Claire of San Francisco, CA; daughters Barbara McHale and husband Mike of San Antonio, Susan England of San Marcos, and Janice Kolbe and husband Del of Moraga, CA; grandchildren Michele Russell and husband Cort of San Antonio, Andrew McHale and wife Laura of Kyle, Casey Lee of McQueeney, Sarah McHale of San Antonio, Nick Kolbe of San Louis Obispo, CA, Jacquie Kolbe of Moraga, CA, Morgan Lee of McQueeney, and Patrick Grossman of San Marcos; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday Jan. 20, at 9 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in San Marcos, with Pastor Eddie Valverde, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow at the Fort Sam Houston Cemetery in San Antonio.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Howard Moon fund at the First United Methodist Church of San Marcos, 129 W. Hutchison San Marcos, TX 78666.
