Rena Smith Deck

— Rena Smith Deck, a resident of San Marcos for most of her life, passed away Jan. 20, 2007 at the age of 91.
She was born Jan. 22, 1915, to Jesse C. and Myrtle Smith in Fort Worth. She married her college sweetheart, William L. Deck, on Dec. 21, 1939, and he preceded her in death in 1989. Rena graduated from San Marcos High School in 1932 and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Southwest Texas State University. She taught school for 33 years.
Rena was an active member of numerous organizations. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and active in the Fidelis Sunday School class. She was also a member of Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma and served as treasurer and reporter for many years. She was a member of the Crescendo Music Club and served as president, secretary and reporter. She was also a member of the San Marcos Association of Retired Teachers where she served as president and reporter and was a member of the University Ladies Association of SWTSU where her husband taught for 43 years.
Rena is survived by one son, William Robert Deck and his wife Shirley of Cedar Creek; two grandchildren, Terry Deck and his wife Sandy and her two children, J. J. and Brianna; and Rena Kay Waugh and her husband Dennis also of Cedar Creek; two great grandsons, Anthony Deck and Reno Waugh; two brothers, Nolan Smith and his wife B. J. of Florida and Carey Smith and his wife Glenda of San Angelo; sister-in-law Georgie Smith of Yoakum; sister Leta Krause of Austin and a special niece Elona Duell of Raleigh, North Carolina; plus many other nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death not only by her loving husband, but also by three brothers, Harry Smith, J. C. Smith and Alvin Smith, and one sister, Nona Cowan.
Funeral services will be today at 2:30 p.m. at Thomason Funeral Home, 2001 Ranch Road 12, San Marcos. Rev. Bob Maas and Rev. Mark Newton of First Baptist Church will officiate. Interment will be at Memory Lawn Memorial Park in Martindale.
