SMCISD: Incumbent, challenger grab posts

By Ashley Landis
Staff Reporter

San Marcos CISD voters on Saturday elected challenger David T. Castillo and incumbent Margie Villalpando to the San Marcos CISD Board of Trustees.

Castillo beat out incumbent Joe Castillo in District 1 and Villalpando will serve another term representing District 2.

Castillo won with 173 votes, compared to incumbent Joe Castillo’s 31 and challenger Lee “Barry” Davis at 21. Villalpando got 64 votes compared to challenger Laura Duhon’s 40.

District 3 was decided when Jesse Ponce Jr.’s opponents dropped out of the race in March. He ran unopposed.

David T. Castillo, 43, is a Spanish teacher and football and basketball coach at Del Valle ISD. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in education and holds graduate hours for English as a Second Language. He is a graduate of San Marcos High School.

Villapando, 64, has held her place on the school board for four years. She is a doctoral administrative secretary at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary and earned a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences degree. She is a graduate of San Marcos High School.

Jesse Ponce Jr., 38, is an assistant supervisor and carpenter for Hays CISD. He graduated from San Marcos High School.

Castillo, Villapando and Ponce will be sworn in at the May 19 school board meeting.

Of the 7,117 voters registered in District 1, 225 voted, and of 5,709 voters in District 2, 104 voted.

District 1 spans south from Staples Road, mostly east of IH 35 and includes San Marcos High School, Goodnight Junior High, Hernandez Intermediate, Miller Junior High, Bowie Elementary and DeZavala Elementary.

District 2 runs east of IH 35, north of District 1 and does not include any campuses. District 3 runs along IH 35, north of McCarty and includes the Bonham Pre-Kindergarten campus and SMCISD central offices.
