JCK evacuated after fire alarms

By Anita Miller
News Editor

San Marcos Employees and students were evacuated from the JC Kellam Building on the Texas State University campus this morning after a ninth floor fire alarm sounded.

University Police Sergeant Brian Carpenter said it appears an alarm tripped that set off others in different areas.

“We’re unsure why. Maintenance is looking into it,” Carpenter said.

He said campus police and San Marcos Fire Rescue personnel walked every floor and found no smoke or fire or anything that would have caused the system to do what it did.

Carpenter said it’s possible that a light ballast might have sent off a smoky odor that made its way into an air handler unit. Each air handler unit is equipped for fire suppression. “It’s a good system. It does not allow fire to travel,” he said.

The call came in at 10:29 p.m. and the “all clear” was sounded at 11:25 a.m.

San Marcos firefighters had to break from a structure fire in a doctor’s office on Thorpe Lane for the response to JCK.

Carpenter said those evacuated were allowed back in after about 20 minutes.

Investigation will continue.
