Luncheon is Aug. 20

On Wednesday, Aug. 20 the San Marcos Hispanic Chamber (SMHCC) the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District (SMCISD) and the Greater San Marcos Youth Council will host the annual “Back-To-School Luncheon.”

This year's site is in the new San Marcos High School Cafeteria.

It's hard to believe, but the 2008-2009 school year is just around the corner. While teachers are preparing for the start of school, many SMCISD students will not have the resources and school supplies to adequately begin the school year.

The San Marcos Greater Youth council cites a greater need this year, due to the economic downturn and the rising costs of basic necessities such as food, electricity and gas.

Your contributions in school materials or money will make a great difference in a young persons' life. Join SMHCC directors, Wal-Mart, Grande Communications, Central Texas Medical Center and others in making this a most meaningful event for school children in our community. Education is our key to the future.

Gov. Perry Names

Hope Andrade Texas Secretary of State

Governor Rick Perry named Esperanza “Hope” Andrade of San Antonio the 107th Secretary of State.

Andrade took office July 23.

She is the first Latina to serve as secretary of state since Sam Houston appointed Stephen F. Austin in 1836.

Conference for Women

The ninth annual Texas Conference for Women has moved from Austin, Texas to Houston. The Conference will bring together an extraordinary cast of speakers who are leaders in their respective fields on Oct. 16.

The one-day, non-partisan Texas Conference for Women, hosted by Governor Rick Perry and First Lady Anita Perry, will feature inspiring keynote speakers and more than 75 experts in business, health, personal development, media, the environment and finance leading seminars and workshops on the issues that matter most to women. Attendees will discover new communication skills, leadership strategies and work/life balance tools that will enhance their professional and personal growth as they begin the next chapter of their lives.

The George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston provides ample space for the popular breakout sessions and exhibit hall. The move to Houston, after eight incredibly successful years in Austin, brings with it new opportunities to connect, to learn, to share and to network.

Texas State Hosts

Hispanic Heritage

Month Kickoff

A Texas-sized fiesta on the banks of the San Marcos River will kick-off this year's Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. The event will take place Saturday Sept. 13 from 3 to 8 p.m.

Enjoy key performances by award-winning music group Salsa del Rio and the San Marcos High School folklorico dance group. Afterwards, test your grito skills or jalapeno-eating stamina in two contests. For the younger crowd there will be moonwalks, games and prizes plus a special visit by the San Marcos Fire and Rescue.

The theme for this year's celebration is community and will focus on the importance of civic responsibility and public service in younger generations.

The kick-off celebrates the beginning of a month-long schedule of film festivals, dinners and a speaking series.

“Hispanic heritage month is all about promoting cultural diversity among Texas State students and the local community,” said Javier Apolinar, Hispanic Heritage Month Committee chair. “Partici-pants can expect a festive learning experience that embraces a variety of Latino cultures.”
