A Word About Recycling - November 16, 2008

No need to mention that with the current economic problems, some of the prices which were much higher than last year just a short time ago are falling pretty fast. One example might be at the gasoline station. Another might be on all the Christmas sales already taking place... 50% off many items even weeks before Thanksgiving.

With all the things going on in the world today I think we probably need to take a smile break. First, though, I have to start out with some sad news. Roland Lawrence LaPrise, age 91, passed away last week. Larry, as he was called is best known as the author of the Hokey Pokey.

The elections are now behind us. Hays County stepped up to the plate and gave a strong endorsement to its elected leadership as well as supported a much needed road bond package that will begin the process of building much needed infrastructure for our future. Congratulations to all who worked hard in order for these successes to take place.

A Word About Recyling - November 9, 2008

As mentioned in last week’s column, the price paid for recycled iron and steel is going down. With the economic slowdown our country and the world is experiencing, iron and steel aren’t the only recycled material going down.

A recent article in the Recycling Today e-newsletter was interesting to us in that in England, through the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), they are striving to reduce the amount the construction industry sends to the landfill in half by 2012.

A Word About Recycling - October 26, 2008

If you had scrap metal (primarily iron and steel) to recycle recently and didn’t take advantage of the higher prices being paid or it a short time ago, the price of it is now going down. (Probably part of the economic down-turn world-wide.)

A Word About Recycling - October 19, 2008

How would you like to receive points for recycling that you could redeem at local stores (a little like the frequent-flier program)? A recent article in the Newsweek magazine (Oct. 6) explained this program called RecycleBank.
