Some of you may remember a children’s TV program that started by asking a question, “Do you know what time it is?” (And answered it by saying it was time for the name of the program.)
Well today, we’re going to ask instead, “Do you know what day it is?” And we’ll answer by saying, “It’s Texas Recycles Day!” Yes, Nov. 15 is Texas Recycles Day.
Even though you may not actually recycle anything today since it’s Sunday, you can still take a moment to consider how much good recycling does and consider recycling even more of your waste or things you no longer need. (Taking things to Goodwill, the Salvation Army, or a church thrift shop is also considered recycling.)
You can also log on to the TRD Website at TexasRecyclesDay.org. http://www.texasrecyclesday.org/
You will find this Texas Recycles Day Web site has a lot of good information on helping the environment and some general recycling practices.
Switching subjects, we noticed in the latest Recycling Today e-newsletter an item concerning electronic waste.
“LG Electronics USA Inc. and Waste Management Inc. announced the first recycling program for hotel operators to dispose of outdated television sets and computer monitors.”
In starting this effort next year, “The program will capitalize on WM’s network of more than 200 recycling centers throughout the United States.”
(And since most hotels/motels have a TV in every room, this program should help insure the obsolete ones are properly disposed of.)
Now for an unsolicited personal endorsement of a local project. We all know recycling is part of conservation. Thus we feel this is indirectly related.
We noticed in an ad by the city’s Public Services Department in last Sunday’s paper, they are again having a project to trade out old toilets for free new “high-efficiency” ones (with certain restrictions that most can meet).
Having taken advantage of this program when it was offered before, we can tell you these new commodes really work great. (Unlike some of the older water-saving models you could buy which often required a double flush to get the desired results.)
Since some time ago we got in the habit of taking daily readings of both our electric and water meters to spot any unusual things, which has paid off in a couple of circumstances, it was easy to see the reduction in water use with these new toilets. Being curious and thus experimenting, we found they are so efficient that even the half-flush will work for most solids.
So if you meet the restrictions, we highly encourage you to take advantage of this program. (You can call them at 393-8310 for more information.)
Till next week, do have a great one... (and celebrate “Texas Recycles Day” today).

What will Heaven be like? This age-old question has been answered in many ways. Heaven has been made the butt of thousands of jokes. These usually begin with three people approaching those pearly gates and having a conversation with Peter, the apostle and holder of the keys to the blessed land.

As I began thinking about today’s essay I sensed a presence of the ghost of New Years past. I’m at the age of “if I make it ‘til …” So, if I make it ‘til Sunday I will have been around for 80 changes of the calendar.
