Area students compete in Chess Tournament
The San Marcos Activity Center recently hosted its first Scholastic Chess Tournament. A banquet room full of parents and supporters watched as 36 elementary and middle school students competed last Saturday for individual and team trophies.
Brain power and sportsmanship virtues were on full throttle for five hours.
The event— sponsored by the San Marcos Chess Club, the Travis Elementary Chess Club and the Crockett Elementary Chess Club — featured three divisions: Primary (2nd -3rd grade), Elementary (4th-5th grade) and Middle School (grades 6-8).
The top finishers in the Primary Division were: Vincent Zheng (1st-Travis), Griffin Orta (2nd-Crockett), Austin Hooper (3rd-Travis) and Jack Shaver (4th-Travis). Elementary Division: Juan Torres (1st-Hernandez), Christian Alvarado (2nd-Mendez), Ethan Pike (3rd-Travis) and Rebecca Meredith (4th-Travis). Middle School Division: Gabriel Ortiz (1st-Crockett), Justin Van Shaar (2nd-Miller), Hunter Bryan (3rd-Miller) and Matthew Field (4th-Miller).
Travis Elementary Chess Club won the Overall Team Trophy.
Because of the success, plans have already begun to have another tournament next year.
