College Soccer: Bobcats get a new look

Texas State senior midfielder Kelsie Townsend had one goal in three starts (18 games) in 2012 and will be a leader for the Bobcats in 2013. Townsend is one of five seniors for Texas State this season, the team’s first in the Sun Belt (File Photo).

Texas State head coach Kat Conner is ahead of the curve, knowing the competition in the Sun Belt Conference will be challenging. In preparation for the transition from the WAC, Conner has the Bobcats practicing a new look.

Conner’s adjustments are in line with U.S. Soccer’s suggested formation.

Over the past few seasons Conner’s team ran a 4-4-2 scheme. This season Texas State will experiment with a 4-2-3-1, which is what most of the national teams use.

“We are going to be playing around with it in the preseason,” Conner said. “We have the capabilities with our players to actually run it. I’m excited.”
