College Athletics: Strahan gets updated
The court inside Texas State’s Strahan Coliseum will have a new look for Bobcat fans when they come to watch the school’s volleyball and basketball teams play in 2013-14.
The most distinctive look that is the sidelines on the court have been painted maroon with the words Texas State on both baselines of the court. Texas State’s “Rising Star” logo is in each corner.
Another standout feature is the large Bobcat head logo that is at center court with new Sun Belt Conference logos located inside each free throw line. The logo also extends to the baseline of the volleyball court as well.
Texas State joins the Sun Belt Conference on July 1 after being a member of the WAC in 2012-13.
The volleyball team will be the first team to utilize the newly-designed court when the Bobcats play Lamar in the first round of the Delta Zeta Bobcat Classic on Aug. 30 at 11:30 a.m. Texas State plays its first Sun Belt Conference contest inside Strahan Coliseum on Sept. 27 when it hosts Louisiana-Lafayette.
Head volleyball coach Karen Chisum enters her 36th season at Texas State and is ranked sixth among active Division I head coaches with 757 career victories. Chisum led the Bobcats to seven conference championships (last coming in 2011) and eight conference tournament titles (same year).
In addition to the new logos, Texas State will have additional floor seating for its men’s basketball games during the 2013-14 season. This will be the first season under new head coach Danny Kaspar, who was hired back in April.
Kaspar was named Texas State’s head coach after leading Stephen F. Austin to a 27-5 overall record and a berth to the NIT after the Lumberjacks won their third Southland Conference championship in the past six years. He received the Hugh Durham Award, which is given to the nation’s top Mid-Major Coach. He also was named the Top Division I coach in Texas and Southland Conference Coach of the Year in 2012-13.
Zenarae Antoine leads the women’s basketball team for the third consecutive season and the Bobcats return eight players from last season in 2013-14. Antoine is 27-24 in her career.
