Dozens flock to San Marcos River Ranch for SCR event
MARTINDALE — The USA South Central Region Water Ski Championship kicked off a three-day event last Friday with more than 225 participants.
Water athletes ages 7 to 92 competed in slalom, trick and jump competition at the San Marcos River Ranch in Martindale, according to Tina Lindsey, tournament committee chairperson.
Lindsey, winner of world medals and homeowner at the San Marcos River Ranch, noted that their small community has been instrumental in “growing” the sport this year, surpassing all previous records for registrants in a regional tournament.
She is one of three women who are residents at San Marcos River Ranch to win world medals in 2012. Kay Nichols and Lori Kruegar are the others.
“This event will be a great test for us to qualify for 2014 Nationals and get us ready for the Senior World Competition in Italy later that year,” Lindsey said.
The water ski community also hosts the Texas State Ski Team, which trains there and have won two division championships over the past five years.
“During the tournament, the skiers are working to earn ratings to pre-qualify for the national event which we will also be hosting here at our private ski development in August 2014,” Lindsey said.
The community bid against Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas to secure the regional event, but had to win their bid for the national event against much stiffer competition including Chicago, Ill., West Palm, Fla., and Sacramento, Calif.
“This is a big deal for Texas and our local community,” Lindsey said.
