High School Track and Field: Rattlers ready for regionals
Four San Marcos High School athletes will aim for state berths as the Class 5A, Region IV Track and Field Championships begin today at San Antonio’s Heroes Stadium.
SMHS junior Nikki Sanchez will be making her third consecutive regional appearance after placing second in the 800-meter run at last week’s Area meet with a time of two minutes, 17.42 seconds. Sanchez will be shooting for her second straight state berth.
Sophomore Madison Miles will compete in two events after taking second in the long jump and third in the 100-meter dash last week. Miles, who went to regionals least year in the long jump, sailed 17 feet, 8.25 inches at the Area meet, while clocking 12.82 seconds in the 100.
SMHS senior Frankie Torres will compete in the 1,600-meter run after taking fourth at Area with a time of 4:30.16. He’ll be making his second regional appearance.
Senior Cory Brown placed fifth in the 400, but will compete in this weekend’s meet after Johnson’s Robert Ford (the fourth-place finisher) withdrew from the event.
Running prelims were scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. this morning with field events set to start at 2:30 p.m. Saturday’s running finals start at noon.
