HS Softball: Clutch hitting gives Hays first team title

AUSTIN — Lucas-Lovejoy found out last Saturday what 29 other teams did earlier this season: Hays is an offensive juggernaut and Aaron Fuller’s team is even better with its backs against the wall.

During the Lady Rebels’ 11-8 victory in the Class 4A state title game at McCombs Field on the University of Texas campus, the Lady Panthers got within one out of putting Hays away in three different innings. Lovejoy never got that third out, as the Lady Rebels unloaded for eight runs with two outs and each rally started with no runners on base.

“We’ve done that game after game and all through the playoffs,” said Fuller, who played for Ty Harrington at Texas State from 2006-07. “We know as long as we have an out, we’re never out of it.”
