HS Softball: SMHS looks to bounce back at New Braunfels
The San Marcos Lady Rattlers will try to bounce back fro Friday night’s District 25-5A opening loss to Smithson Valley when the team visits New Braunfels tonight for a 7 p.m. game at Lady Unicorn Field.
The Lady Rattlers struggled offensively in their last outing, allowing Smithson Valley to score a 12-1 run-rule win after five innings. San Marcos fell behind by nine runs early and could never bounce back.
“We just couldn’t climb out of the hole,” Stoughton said. “When you get into a deficit like that and all of a sudden, it takes away playing the short game and moving runners around. There’s a little bit more urgency.”
Outside of a disastrous first inning, SMHS went toe-to-toe with the Lady Rangers, who won the Class 4A state championship last year. San Marcos fought back and put several runners on base, but couldn’t string together multiple hits.
The Lady Rattlers (10-7-1, 0-1) avoided the shutout when Gabby Guerrero ripped an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth.
Guerrero is the Lady Rattlers’ leading hitter, batting .469 with six RBIs, while Stephanie Marmolejo is hitting .407 with a team-leading 15 RBIs.
New Braunfels (14-7, 0-1) is coming off a 10-0 loss to New Braunfels-Canyon.
Following tonight’s game, San Marcos will open play in its annual SMHS Lady Rattler Spring Break Classic Thursday.
