Sixteen San Marcos Academy students, including ten local students, were selected as “Second Mile Award” winners for the first quarter of the spring 2013 semester. The award recognizes outstanding effort in the classroom based on teacher recommendations. Students were presented their certificates during a chapel assembly March 18. Recipients include Cooper Allan of Martindale; Celeste Barrientos, Brayden Burton, Andrew Hansen, Logan Mitchell and Rusti Wade of San Marcos; Mackenzie Heldstab of Buda; Jenna Marburger and Hank Shirley of Kyle; and Christian Wilson of Geronimo. Other winners were Allan Bui, Nguyet Bui and Nam Doan of Vietnam; and Sophia Ge, Edward Hu and Doris Pan of China. The Second Mile Award was established at the academy 34 years ago to recognize students who go above and beyond what is generally expected in the effort they put forth in the classroom. The award is presented each nine weeks. All students are eligible for the award, regardless of grade average. To qualify, a student must receive nominations from at least four of his or her teachers.
