SMPD Citizen Police Academy starts Sept. 5
The San Marcos Police Department will begin its Fall Citizen Police Academy class on Sept. 5.
The 12-week academy will meet once a week on Thursday from 6-9 p.m. The course is free of charge and a complimentary dinner is provided at every class.
“The Citizen Police Academy is a unique opportunity where citizens learn the day-to-day challenges police officers face,” said CPA coordinator, Corporal Laray Taylor. “The officers who participate in CPA gain a broader perspective and insight to the public they serve. It’s a win-win situation and a great learning environment.”
Applications are available at the police department or online at the city’s website, www.sanmarcostx.gov. Completed applications must be dropped off at the police department records division by Wednesday, Aug. 28.
During the program, citizens will get an inside look at the police department starting with the hiring process, officer selection and the background investigations that officers must pass prior to being hired.
The instruction goes beyond the classroom. The police department will take students to the shooting range and allow them to shoot the weapons that the officers carry, as well as drive their police cars on the driving track during simulated pursuit driving.
