Thrine Costilla Soto
Thrine Costilla Soto died peacefully at home in San Marcos, surrounded by family members, on Friday, July 26, at the age of 94. Born Oct. 13, 1918, in Mexico, she was predeceased by her husband of 36 years, Jesus T. Soto, and her daughter Carmen Soto. She is survived by her three sons, Jesus, Ed and Roy Soto, five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
She had a gregarious personality, fierce independence and legendary style. Always wanting to learn and know more, Thrine completed her GED after her husband’s death, then went on to earn her Certified Nursing Assistant diploma. Throughout her life she was an astute observer of current events with strong opinions on whatever was happening locally, nationally and internationally.
Preferring to be outside working with plants, Thrine’s yard won Garden of the Month awards three times. Thrine had an impact on everyone she met and genuinely cared about helping others, whether they were family, friends or strangers. For 27 years she volunteered at least three days each week at the Hays County Food Bank, loving the people she worked with and the community she served.
The Soto family wants to thank their friends, family and the community for their support and prayers during this difficult time. Although our hearts are heavy, we are comforted knowing she is in heaven.
Visitation will be held at Pennington Funeral Home, San Marcos, on Tuesday, July 30 from 4:30 to 7 p.m. followed by a Rosary. A Burial Mass will be held on Wednesday, July 31 at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church, 624 E. Hopkins, where Thrine was a lifelong member. Burial will follow at Guadalupe Cemetery in San Marcos.
