In Sunday’s article, “TAKS scores mixed,” incorrectly cited Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills for 2006 throughout the article in comparison to the preliminary 2007 passing rates, which were reported correctly. The incorrect rates published were taken from the Texas Education Agency’s Web site that show passing rates weighted by revised statewide standards. The numbers were used throughout the article in comparison to the unweighted 2007 passing rates.
For example, the article should have said that 50 percent, not 70 percent, of ninth graders passed the math portion of TAKS in 2006 when compared to the 2007 passing rate of 55 percent. Likewise, the article should have said that 52 percent, not 73 percent, of tenth graders passed the math test in 2006. Incorrect 2006 passing rates were also cited for: third grade reading (which should have been 91 percent, not 96 percent); fourth grade math (87 percent, not 95 percent); fifth grade reading (75 percent, not 90 percent); and eleventh grade math (73 percent, not 88 percent).
