Correction to SMCISD tax story

Tuesday's article, "School rollback tax," should have

said that the average Hays County homeowner — a house

valued at $149,000 — would have saved $712, not $685,

had school district taxes fallen from $1.83 per $100

in 2005-06 to $1.37 per $100 in 2007-08 as district

officials said they expected as recently as May. Under

the current proposed tax rate, $1.50, the average

homeowner would pay $2,235 in school district taxes

next year, $491 less than he or she would have paid in

2005-06 on a house valued at $149,000. Also, because

of school district taxes are comprised of two parts –

maintenance/operations and debt service — some parts

of the story may not have been clear. The rates for

this year, last year, next year's original proposed

tax rate and the current proposed tax rate are as

follows:

2005/2006

M&O TAX RATE = 1.50

I&S (DEBT) RATE = 33 cents

TOTAL 05/06 RATE = $1.83 per $100

2006/2007

M&O TAX RATE = 1.37

I&S (DEBT) RATE = 33 cents

TOTAL 06/07 TAX RATE = $1.73 per $100

CURRENT PROPOSED 2007/2008

M&O TAX RATE = 1.17

I&S (DEBT) RATE = 33 cents

TOTAL 07/08 CURRENT PROPOSED TAX RATE = $1.50 per $100

ORIGINAL PROPOSED 2007/2008

M&O TAX RATE = 1.04

I&S (DEBT) RATE = 33 cents

TOTAL 07/08 ORIGINAL PROPSED TAX RATE = $1.37 per $100
