— They’ll be here again this weekend.
Bundled up against the cold, wind and rain. Working on challenging projects to keep the economic life blood of the nation flowing. Dealing with motorists short on temper and long on complaints.
While many here are enjoying a holiday weekend break, it will be business as usual for Union Pacific crews reworking two local rail crossings.
Though railroads have come under fire in recent years for hindering traffic within the cities their rails criss-cross, their long-standing value to our economy is often ignored.
Also ignored is the hard work and sacrifice of the work crews which often toil in the wee hours of the morning to keep from inconveniencing the rest of us as we make our way to work or school the next day.
As we drive past the work sites in our heated vehicles, sipping that hot cup of coffee, a smile or wave might go a long way toward sending a bit of warmth in the direction of these hard-working folks.
They deserve it. No doubt about it. RHR
