The sale of the San Marcos Academy campus to then Southwest Texas State University 30 years ago was met with mixed reaction in San Marcos.
The academy, after all, had been an integral part of San Marcos proper for many years, and had become a part of this community’s culture.
The loss of old Carroll Hall, was especially painful for local history buffs and academy alumni.
But as the academy, university and community look back on a deal born of a conversation between Dr. Lee Smith and Dr. Jack Byrom, it must be said this sale has allowed both institutions to greatly expand their academic horizons.
And rather than lose some part of itself with this transaction, it seems San Marcos has certainly found more of which to be proud inside its educational attaché. RHR
