Water Works

Art over flowing in new exhibit at Walker's Gallery

From staff reports

San Marcos Artists flowed into the new year with a great outpouring of their work, responding with their own interpretations of the theme: "Water: Metaphor, Myth and Meaning."

Along with diverse styles from representative to abstract, and media from photography and oil paintings to collage and painted plates, artists expressed a wide range of responses to the stimulus of water. Some addressed the universality of water, some the literal, some the whimsical and some the political.

"This is the first exhibit that we have had more work than we could hang," said gallery curator, Linda Kelsey-Jones. “And all of it was very high quality, so it was difficult to decide which pieces to leave out. It seems that the essential role that water plays in every aspect of our lives and some of the critical environmental issues we are facing struck a deep chord in artists."

Most of the works in the current exhibit are by artists from the San Marcos/Austin area, but there are also works on display from Washington State, Connecticut and California and by artists from England, France, South Africa and Switzerland.

Exhibits at the Walkers' Gallery are sponsored by the San Marcos Area Arts Council and the City of San Marcos with support from the San Marcos Arts Commission.

The public is invited to attend the exhibit opening and artists' reception from 5-7:30 p.m. Friday at the San Marcos Activity Center. Most of the exhibited work is for sale. For more information e-mail LKJ@centurytel.net.
