Everything sounds nice with Sugar and Spice

San Marcos — Everyone is invited to a free concert at the San Marcos Public Library featuring Sugar and Spice. This women’s a capella ensemble from Texas State University will perform on Wednesday, April 23 at 7 p.m.

Sugar and Spice enjoys singing a wide variety of a capella repertoire from barbershop to chorales and jazz standards.

The group formed in the fall of 2005 and includes ladies from many majors and of various ages. It originally consisted of five singers and has now doubled in size. The performers in the upcoming library concert include Audrey Dornbusch, Bonnie Wolfe, Nikita Zuberbier, Lacy Dykes, Stephanie Boyd, Emily Crocker, Miranda Stone, Karen Vasquez, Audrey Scott and Jana Key.

Lead singer Kathryn Dane, says “I like that it is a student-run organization. We have the freedom to choose repertoire and the kind of performances we do.

Also, Sugar & Spice has become an outlet for all kinds of people, regardless of musical background.”

Influenced by the sounds of women’s barbershop, commonly known as Sweet Adelines, they have incorporated jazz standards and popular tunes into their shows. Sugar and Spice is devoted to performing at non-profit events as a way to share this music with any and all.

Their love of singing four-part a capella harmony has led them to perform for the Heart of Texas biannual shows, the Alamo Metro Chorus Christmas show, the Hill Country Christmas show, and Texas State University.



Bonnie Wolfe, baritone, believes, “Sugar and Spice has given me the well-roundedness needed to be an experienced future music educator. An all-women’s a capella ensemble is something unique. Plus, it isn’t a class and the members are encouraged to take an active part in deciding the direction of the group.”



Sugar and Spice is directed by Bryan Pulver, a music education major and baritone with Sterling Quartet. Brent Dunavant, the group’s music consultant, is also a music education major and a baritone with the Exclamation! Quartet.



Bass, Amey Szanto-Nicodemus, states “Sugar and Spice shows that music can bring all types together. We are doing a wider variety of repertoire which attracts many young ladies. The camaraderie in the group has developed substantially.”



The sounds and energy of Sugar and Spice will appeal to music lovers of all ages. Everyone will enjoy this original ensemble in the library’s smoke-free venue.
