San Marcos Academy set for commencement

From staff reports

San Marcos The San Marcos Baptist Academy (SMBA) will be holding commencement activities this weekend for the 56 members of the Class of 2008.

Saturday, May 17, festivities begin at 8:30 a.m. with the Ribbon Ceremony in the Prayer Garden located in the shadow of the bell tower behind Robinson Christian Center on campus. This century-old tradition is where the graduating senior girls hand off the reins of leadership to the incoming senior girls.

At 10:30 a.m. the Senior Gate Ceremony ushers the seniors into their new status as graduates. The gate is only opened once each school year for this ceremony and is locked immediately following. The gate, brought to the Academy in l962, was originally located at the State Capital in Austin.

At 7 p.m. the entire student body will be on hand to participate in the annual Academy Awards which is a time to honor the graduates and recognize students of all grade level for their outstanding accomplishments this school year.

At 8:30 p.m. is the JROTC Final Review where President Vic Schmidt, who will retire from the Academy in July, will perform a review the corps of students active as cadets in JROTC.

On Sunday at 2 p.m. SMBA’s Class of 2008 Commencement Ceremony will take place in the Robinson Christian Center.

Final exams for the underclassmen take place beginning Monday, May 19, and end on the final day of classes on Thursday, May 22. The eighth grade graduation ceremony will take place on Friday, May 23, at 10:30 a.m. in the Robinson Christian Center.

San Marcos Academy is a fully accredited college preparatory school committed to educating young men and women within a community based upon Christian values.

The Academy offers a co-educational experience for both boarding and day students in the 7th through 12th grades. Founded in 1907, the Academy is celebrating its 100th anniversary this school year. The Academy is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas (BGCT).
