Hays County hosts food safety seminar

By Susan Schramm
Hays County Extension Agent

San Marcos The Hays County Extension Service will be hosting a Food Manager Certification Training course on July 7-8, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

It is estimated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that each year 76 million Americans, (or 1 in 4 Americans), will become ill and 1 in 1,000 will be hospitalized due to a foodborne illness. Foodborne illnesses will also claim the lives of 14 Americans each day.

The foodservice manager is vital to preventing foodborne illness. Under the Texas Food Establishment Rules ( TFER ), managers are responsible for teaching basic food safety principles to their employees. They must also help their employees understand how foodborne illnesses are transmitted, the symptoms of foodborne illness, how food becomes contaminated and how to prevent this from occurring.

The Texas Cooperative Extension Food Manager Certification Training course will teach managers about:

• Food safety and sanitation

• Purchasing and receiving food safely

• Managing the operation
