When Richard Anzaldua read the San Marcos Daily Record article about Angela and Veronica Martinez losing their parents last month, only one thing went through his mind: “Those poor kids.”
So he, along with other LULAC members and local sponsors, decided to help.
LULAC Council 4876 will be hosting a chicken and sausage plate fundraiser to benefit the Martinez children from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Sam’s Club parking lot in San Marcos. Activities will include the jiggle bug train, kids’ games, a balloon man and a jumping castle.
“What we’re doing for them is nothing compared to what needs to be done. We know we can’t take the pain away from their parents being gone, but we can give them a special day,” Anzaldua said.
Their mother, Mary Delores Torres, became ill last summer. Last December, their father Roy suffered a fatal heart attack. Later that same week, Torres went into the hospital and died. The children are currently under the care of their aunt, Fidela Lopez, who became their guardian at the request of a letter written by Torres.
All the proceeds from Saturday’s event will go to the family.
Food tickets are $5 and are available through any LULAC 4876 member or by calling Anzaldua at 353-0306.
