Art Across the Hill Country

New Walkers’ Gallery show brings San Marcos, Wimberley together

From staff reports

Wimberley and San Marcos are a mere 13.5 miles — or 4.5 leagues — apart, but their respective art leagues have brought them even closer in an exhibit of work by their member artists now on display at the Walkers' Gallery at the San Marcos Activity Center.

“It’s wonderful to be able to connect with other communities, to get to know other artists and what they’re doing,” San Marcos Art League President Veronique Zehnder Hahn said.

The public is invited to meet the artists and enjoy the exhibit at the artists' reception this Friday from 5 to 7:30 p.m.

The exhibit of 80 artworks represents 30 artists and a wide range of subject matter and styles from still lifes to abstracts, the very traditional to edgy contemporary. Most of the paintings are for sale, and one of Robert Jones' paintings, seen by an an activity center visitor was sold on its way into the gallery.

The Hill Country is a land of special beauty, enchantment and creativity — little wonder it has been attracting generations of artists to visit and to stay. This exhibit with Wimberley and San Marcos artists in league with each other, honors the Hill Country with its share of pixies, sunflowers, landscapes children at play— and yes, of course, a few bluebonnets.

“The art work is very diverse. You have from the very traditional to the very abstract, and that’s fantastic,” Zehnder Hahn said.

The San Marcos Art League is also continuing its rotating art show at the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce, and has future shows planned at the Tantra Coffee House and the Root Cellar Cafe in San Marcos.

Art exhibits at the Walkers' Gallery at the San Marcos Activity Center are sponsored by the San Marcos Area Arts Council and the city of San Marcos with support from the San Marcos Arts Commission.
